Greensboro Economic Development Alliance Releases Cluster Mapping Study
Greensboro, NC (Nov 6, 2007) – The Greensboro Economic Development Alliance (GEDA) is releasing a transportation and logistics industry Inventory and Cluster Mapping study conducted by the Center for Business and Economic Research at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Dr. Andrew Brod and Dr. Keith Debbage were the principle researchers
on the project. “Providing high-quality, applied research that benefits
economic development efforts in our community is our mission and
we have been delighted to work with GEDA on this regional project,”
stated Dr. Andrew Brod, Director of the Center for Business and Economic
Research at UNCG.
The study was commissioned to address the specific components and
geography of the Piedmont Triad’s transportation, warehousing, logistics,
and supply chain industry sector. It has three main sections consisting
of an inventory of companies in the cluster based on NAICS codes,
mapping of the cluster, and qualitative information gleaned from
company executives in the industry. Even though the study was commissioned
by the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance, it was conducted
on behalf of the entire Piedmont Triad region.
The mapping portion of the study focused on the linkages between the companies and the highway or airport infrastructure and segments them into eight different maps based on NAICS code with one composite map providing a snapshot of the entire industry in the region. The interview portion of the study focuses on the regional assets for the industry as well as on items that should be improved such as awareness of logistics education options, and the addition of more lanes to the region’s highways.
“This study has provided a more detailed understanding of the transportation and logistics industry here in our region,” commented Dan Lynch, GEDA President. “Since the industry is one of our cluster focus areas, it is important that we understand it in detail and know the areas that we can improve to make Greensboro and the Triad more attractive for future business growth.”
Greensboro Economic Development Alliance’s (GEDA) mission is to facilitate the creation of high quality jobs, attract new capital investment, retain and expand existing businesses, improve per capita income and generally improve the quality of life in Greensboro and Guilford County. GEDA is a member of the Greensboro Partnership, created to develop a vibrant community that expands and attracts business while advancing the quality of life for all.
